Sirius Black sat wearily down at his house's table, staring into a bowl of pourridge. He had been up half the night with Remus and was not feeling very well. To make matters worse, a familiar tawny barn owl floated purposefully over to him and dropped a red envelope before him. "James," he sighed discontentedly. "I've got another one." Steam began to come out of its seal. He groaned and picked it up with disdain. "Not another one...." His mother wasn't the type to send letters, for letters to her son would not add to her wonderful reputation in one bit. But howlers, she did bother with. They seemed stop whatever dared to tarnish it. "Wrecken I should burn it?" he asked dully, watching it sizzle. "I wonder what would happen if I burned it."

Remus, who had been seated next to him, looking as tired, if not moreso, looked wearily at the envelope. Not up to arguing that anything stupid would make it worse, he bit into a piece of toast dripping with strawberry jam. "Oy, Sirius, don't open it yet, let me leave first," he said tiredly, "I've got a splitting headache and that would not help any." Remus let out a small moan of pain; he was sore all over, exauhsted, sick, and hungry. Unfortunately for him, these symptoms could only be cured one at a time. His dull eyes watched Sirius carefully, waiting for a response.

"If Regulus lets slip one more thing about me I'll throttle him! Ever since he came here he's been following me around like a puppy! A very obnoxious, ugly puppy." He frowned as the envolope smoked wildly. "Too late..." He gripped his forehead and sighed, "Sorry Remus." -Sirius Black!- Her voice rang through the hall with much echo. Every head turned toward the Gryffinder table. Sirius, quite adjusted to this routine, took a drink from his goblet as if he were simply being told the time. As the voice rang out on and on about detentions, snide remarks, etc, etc, Sirius pretended to be frightened and bothered. He overexagerated so much that he began to laugh and his fellow Gryffinders, a few hufflepuffs laughed alongside him. It was the last few words that struck him. -one more offense...and you will not be returning...- He swallowed hard. Not be returning? Not be returning to Hogwarts? He snatched it out of the air quickly and held it over a candle flame to keep it from continuing. "Bluffing," Sirius said loudly, motioning toward the charred red envelope. "She's bluffing!" But as he said so he was not so sure. Turning to Remus with a trembling face he said, "C'mon. I don't think I've got much of an appetite any more." As he stood to his feet, every eye in that school was on him. It had taken a moment for talking to rise up again, begun by the Ravenclaws. And the Slytherins still grinned, happy with themselves for the blow against their enemy. Regulus Black was the only one who looked concerned.

Remus had buried his head in his hands and listened to the roaring of his mother and the clashing laughter that surrounded it. Not listening to most of the words himself, he tried to soothe his pounding head. He only succeeded in moaning in pain. A few moments passed before the laughter died abruptly, as did the yelling. Sirius had stopped shaking the table with his laughter, meaning something was astray. -not be returning...- The words echoed suddenly through his head. Forgetting his pain long enough to steal a glance at his friend, he realized this time it was a cause of true concern. His complexion paled further as he nodded at Sirius' hollow words. The pain in his head seemed insignificant now that his friend hasd lost his usual composure. Sure it usually only took him minutes to regain himself; however, 'I don't have much of an appetite' coming from Sirius? That coduld be serious. "Okay, let's go," Remus answered, keeping his own voice steady as he clambered to his feet beside Sirius. Stealing a look around the Hall, he realized that Sirius' gaze had fallen on Regulus, who looked rather bewildered if he said so himself.

Sirius face was a burning red as he exited the hall. He lowered his head and shuffled his feet, deciding that he needed to find someplace without people, fast. "She hates me," he said, biting his lip. "She hates me! She always has! Not be returning!? She doesn't care about me at all! It'sa ll about the family reputation! She hates me, Remus." He turned his face away to hide it. "I can't take it Remus. I can't leave Hogwarts...I just can't! I've no where to go! If I leave Hogwarts, I'll have to stay at home...and...and...Remus if you only saw the way she looks at me. I get enough of it during the summer." He released a sob in his voice and his eyes glittered with tears. "If you only saw how they all look at me. My own family." A tear fell from his eyes but he only turned redder and tried to hide it. After a moment, he said, "But me? Nah, I don't need, I don't need, f-family. Stop looking at me!" he snarled, running his sleeve across his eyes.

Remus faltered, a few steps behind his friend. 'Oh dear,' he thought softly, he certainly wasn't used to Sirius like this. "Padfoot..." he began softly, formulating the words in his mind. Keeping pace with his upset friend, Remus inched toward Sirius. "Your family...you know what they're like, Sirius, and your mother....she's just too wrapped up in her own fantasies. Your life is great Sirius, and you've got family. Sirius," Remus said, so lowly that it may have been difficult to hear, "you've got us. You'e got me and James, and Peter, and every one of those girls. You could have anything you wanted, Sirius. If it's any consolation, she's made those empty threats before, and never gone through with it." Remus' voice was almost pleading now. "Don't be upset, I hate to see you upset. Everyone needs family Sirius; that's why we're here."

Sirius grinned slightly and looked up, "That's right. Thanks Moony. The marauders are a family, arne't we? We don't need anybody else. I'm sorry, Moony. I'd hate to lose it on you while you're feeling so lousy." He shrugged half-heartedly and rubbed the remaining tears from his reddened eyes. "I just wish it didn't have to be this way with the rest of the Blacks, you know? Especially with my mum....ahhh, never mind that. I love you guys." He put his arm around Moony as he walked. "Let's just forget this entire morning ever happened. Say, if you're feeling better later, let's take that passage to Hogsmeade for a Butterbeer."

"That's right. We are," Remus answered, the pain in his head already dulling. "Your family...ah, they'll come around. But Sirius, do me a favor. Never change for your real family. And we love you too much to see you hurt," he answered softly, smiling broadly at Sirius. "And the old Sirius is already coming back. You know that sneaking out is against school rules. Imagine what kind of trouble we'd be in if we were caught," he argued half-heartedly, knowing that regardless of school rules, he would be joining Sirius for a butterbeer later that afternoon.

"You know?" Sirius replied, grinning broadly, "I think I'm beginning to like that pitted feeling we always get when we are caught for something. It brings back memories, doesn't it?" He laughed sharply, throwing back his head to put back in place a few loose hairs. "Don't you worry, Moony, I'm never- ever- going to change."

"And that's the way I like it," Remus answered, weaving his own arm around Sirius' shoulders. "although I could do without that pitted feeling you like so much," he joked with a small eye roll. "Terrible nerves, you know."
OoC: One of those times where you gotta love the truth ♥

*spoiler* (i always feel bad if I dont' put that so here lol)
"Remember that time," continued Sirius as they strode along the halls. "-in our first year, the day we met Peter- when we all snuck into the Slytherin Common Room? We got the password from Snivellus? I got that pitted feeling then...but that was the best...ever..." He began shuffling through his bag for their first class, Potions, and cursed violently. "I think I left my text in the Hall. But I don't fancy going out there again." He shrugged. "Oh well, Ol' Slughorn will have to put up with it.... Besides...I'm his favorite student. Well, next to Lily...and that kid who's grandmum married the minister of magic forty years ago..."
ooc: was slughorn teaching at that time?

Remus chuckled. "Those were good times," he agreed, although laf hating to admit it. "Although back then I hated that pitted feeling more than I do now. First year and terrified." Remus gave a barklike laugh. "But looking back on it...I'd give anything to do it again..." he trailed off, a smile crossing his face. "Slughorn...ah....that man has it in for me. Honestly, he loves Lily though, and you. Remember the day I got in trouble?--the day you and I were making one of our 'forbidden' potions and I got in trouble but you didn't? Goes to show; you're brilliant for being able to make one, and I'm simply a delinquent." Remus rolled his eyes and gave his friend a playful shove. "That's ironic."
OoC: now he is ^^

"You're just a terrible, awful, little mischeivious boy, aren't you?" Sirius replied, feigning hurt on his arm where Remus had shoved him. "If you really, really want to do it again...I'd say we find the password right now...and go for it...doesn't that sound wonderful? Think of it, we could slip sleeping draught into their water!" He burst himself into a fit of laughter that seemed uncontrollable, as he had pictured the situation perfectly in his mind. "But you know," he stated, recovering, "Slughorn was right about one thing- I am a genius."

Remus, who had merely chuckled at the thought of sleeping draught in Slytherin's water, fell in chaotic laughter. "D-d-d-did you j-just ca-all yourself a-a-a genius?" he choked, through an even worse bout of laughter than Sirius. It took him severl moments to calm down and several more to catch his breath. "I mean, you have your moments," he added, grinning apologetically, knowing he meant nothing malicious towards his best friend. "But ask any other teacher round here and they'd say you're headed straight for failure. You know you don't try."

"But that doesn't mean I'm not a genius," snapped Sirius. "I just, I just reserve my efforts for things I'm more interested in... that's all. And my classes, heh, not one of 'em. But I know that's your love, classes. Hey," Sirius grinned and nudged him, "Let's skip our first class and go off to Hogsmeade for a while, what do you say? Come on, Remus! One day, let's ditch. We'll be back for our second class."

Remus scowled; having a heated argument with himself. "We can't miss classes," he nearly began to say, then realizing that these words would not even begin to penetrate Sirius's thick skull. "Alright genius, you've got yourself a deal," he sighed in defeat, although the grin remained on his face. Knowing that it simply would be a waste of time arguing with Padfoot, Remus gave up on class and thought in content about a warm butterbeer from The Three Broomsticks.

"You do love me!" Sirius threw Remus into a tight hug. "How about just you and me this time? James and Peter can figure out where we are for themselves. James is a genius just like me! I'm sure he'll catch up with us. Come on..." he motioned for Remus to follow him as he sped down the hall, taking the Marauder's map from his pocket as he went. In those days it was new, sparkling, their most prized possession. They switched off who kept it between them every week. It was Sirius's turn this week and he held onto it as if it were his dear life.

Remus gave a small roll of his eyes. "Oh yes, I forgot about James, the other genius. But the question is, is James as much of a genius as your fine self?" Remus teased, walking down the hall at a slightly quicker pace. He leaned over to look at the Marauders Map, grinning in spite of himself at their genius. "I forgot--you cuase more trouble when it's your turn than usual....figures..."

"'Course he's not as smart as me," Sirius replied, still grinning, abandoning all his worries about the incident only ten minutes before. He began to crawl through the passage beneath the statue of the one-eyed witch. "And it's my job to cause trouble. There'd be no fun around here if I wasnt't here, would there?" He clapped his friend on the back. "Come on, maybe we'll get caught this time and we can experience that rejuvenating pitted feeling again... I'm just kidding. Come on..."
